The heat wave is still waving here in southern Arizona, but that didn't stop a hearty group of about 70 orienteers from coming out to enjoy a set of courses designed by University of Arizona team member Anna Campbell. On offer today was a white course (Horned Lizard), a yellow course (Spiny Lizard), and an orange course (Whiptail). Each was given a reptile name by Anna, with course difficulty corresponding to the speed of the reptile. Or something like that. There was also a Gila Monster advanced option, which was the same course as the orange/Whiptail course, but on a map with the trails removed. When asked why the notoriously slow moving Gila Monster was chosen as the course name for the most difficult course, Anna quickly provided an answer having to do with the nature of Gila Monsters to forge their own path.
Big thanks to Anna for course design and waking up controls this morning, and to Peg Davis for teaching the beginner's clinic. Everything else--control hanging, registration, timing, control retrieval, tear down--was handled by the Sahuarita NJROTC crew. Huge thanks to them for all their work!
