Today's (4/13/24) event was a barebones training opportunity for TSN members at Box Canyon, an area with a lot of contours and a lot of visibility, making it a great place to practice reading the terrain.
The activity was a line orienteering course (line-o) that took participants up ridges and across spurs and through reentrants. Rather than control markings, the course is a curvy, continuous line meant to be followed as closely as possible. There were four controls hung somewhere along the line, but these locations were not marked on the map.
The most challenging option was to take a "brown map" -- that is, one with only contour lines and other earth features, and then follow the line and mark on your map where the controls were placed.
The next most difficult option was to use a full color map.
Finally, about half the participants chose to take a guided walk along the line, using the full color map.
Thanks to Alan Craig for holding the fort while I hung the controls, Yvonne Poe for helping on the guided walk, and Annie King for bringing donuts and cuties.
You can see the full color map or post your own route on Livelox.
