We are excited to announce the opportunity to learn navigation racing skills from U.S. Junior Orienteering Team Coach Erin Schirm and provide a day of competition classic courses set by Glenn Haselfeld.  The training camp will take place Feb 18-19 in conjunction with the orienteering meet at Catalina State Park hosted by Tucson Orienteering Club on Feb 19.  Coach Erin Schirm will provide instruction at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels, for both juniors and adults, but with a focus on youth.  All are welcome; from beginners with absolutely no experience, to experts who want to compete against other orienteers.  Youth groups are particularly encouraged to attend; please contact us for more information.

The classic courses on Sunday will include White, Yellow, Orange, Brown, Green, Red, Blue.  Advanced courses (Brown, Green, Red, Blue) will be on the long side for their respective categories.  For more information about the courses, see the course setter notes.

Contact Us:  If you have any questions please contact the meet director, Barb Bryant, at barb.bryant (<at>) gmail (<dot>) com (or phone six one seven-three three five-4847).

Registration:  We ask that training camp participants pre-register for the events, either the full week, or the three days that coincide with the training camp.  For those of you who are coming to only do a classic course on Sunday, please register in person when you arrive at the event.

Large Groups:  If you are planning to bring a large group of more than five people, please let the meet director Barb Bryant at barb.bryant (<at>) gmail (<dot>) com (or phone six one seven-three three five-4847) know so that we can reserve enough maps for you.

Youth Groups: All participants under 18 must provide a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.  If your group plans to bring a minor without their parent/guardian, then please download a copy of the Waiver and Permission to Participate form from our Documents, Guides, and Forms page (look for it under the "For Orienteers" section) and have it completed and signed by a parent/guardian before you bring it with you to the event.  For more details, see our article about the waiver form for minors.

Volunteers: Volunteers are needed to work the meet (registration, start/finish, control pickup).  Please contact Meet Director Barb Bryant if you can help: barb.bryant (<at>) gmail (<dot>) com (or phone her at six one seven-three three five-4847).

Bring: Please bring your own lunch and snacks, as well as water. We recommend a hat, sunscreen, safety whistle, and clothing appropriate for orienteering or hiking at Catalina given the day's weather forecast.  Every person (all courses, all meets) is required to carry some type of safety whistle so please bring a whistle or purchase one when you arrive.

Directions:  The GPS coordinates for the park entrance are: N 32.416777, W 110.937581.  From Tucson, drive north on Oracle Road; the park is 6 miles beyond Ina Road.  From Phoenix via I-10, take exit 240 and drive 14 miles east on Tangerine Road.  Turn right at Oracle Road and drive a half mile to the park entrance.  For a more scenic route, or from Mesa and eastern suburbs, take US 60 east to highway 79, then south to Oracle Junction and highway 77 south to the park.  The State Park day-use fee is about $7 per car.  Saturday's training will be at the Flycatcher group area ramada; Sunday's events will be at the Picnic Area ramada.   Follow the O signs.

Camping: Group camping is available at the Flycatcher group area on Saturday night. You may arrive any time on Saturday, and must be out of that area by noon on Sunday (move cars to the parking in the Picnic Area). Cost is $15/vehicle; say you are with Tucson Orienteering Club; we have reserved Flycatcher. Quiet hours are 10pm to 7am. Wood and ground fires are prohibited. Contact barb.bryant (<at>) gmail (<dot>) com ahead of time if you are planning to camp, so that we can inform the rangers.
