Come out and join us for a cool Sunday morning Score-O on Mt. Lemmon (Bigelow)! Up at 9,000', temperatures are typically 20-30 degrees cooler than down in Tucson, so it should be a pleasant 75 degrees during the day :-)  For those of you who have orienteered at Bear Wallow before, note that we have changed the start location to just west of where we typically have registration.  Our forest service permit this year restricts us to the area south of Mt. Bigelow road.

Registration: Please pre-register on-line if you plan on attending. You can also register on-site the morning of the event starting at 8:30 am. You can start any time after 9 am.

The meet directors are Gee Gee Larrington and Jeff Brucker.   Contact GeeGee at gglarrington (-at-) gmail (-dot-) com if you have questions about this meet or would like to help out.  Please offer to help out with registration, timing, or control retrieval.  The fees collected at each event only cover the costs for permits, insurance, transportation, map printing, supplies, and equipment used at the event.  They don’t cover planning, organizing, or running the event.   It is only through the generous volunteer effort of us club members by which these events can happen!

Course: The course will be a two-hour score-o with 23 controls fit for the beginning and advanced orienteerer alike.  Each control will have a point value from 1 – 4 points depending on length and difficulty.  There are controls placed near the start area, and at both corners of the map.  A 2-point penalty will be assessed for each minute the orienteer returns over the two-hour time limit.

There is NO water on Mt. Bigelow. Please bring a little more than you think you will consume.

Fees: $5 for any individual who is a member of a recognized Orienteering Club or $8 per team. $10 per nonmembers or $15 per team. Compasses rent for $1.  Safety whistles sell for $1.  Every person, all courses, all meets is required to carry some type of safety whistle.

Please consider becoming a member of the Tucson Orienteering Club.  We will also be accepting membership renewals and will have a list so you can check the status of your membership.

Schedule:
8:00-8:30 am - Beginner's clinic.
8:30–11:00 am - Registration (register on-line, if possible, so we know you are coming). Express check-in for members!
9:00 am - Course opens.
11:00 am - Last start time.
1:00 pm - Everyone must be off the course.
1:00–2:00 pm - Control retrieval (great way to get extra orienteer practice).

Directions:  From Tucson, take the Catalina Highway approximately 21 miles to Mt. Bigelow Road, about a mile past Palisades Ranger Station.  Turn right on Mt. Bigelow Road and look for orienteering signs.  Park here on the side of the road.  You will then walk about 200m up the road to the first junction, near the observatory entrance.  Turn left and proceed gently downhill about 300m to the start location where there is a junction of trails and a wide clearing.  It takes about 75 minutes to get to the event site from downtown Tucson.

Newcomers:  Go directly to Registration.  Ask for instructions and introductory information.  To attend the free beginners’ clinic, arrive between 7:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.

Check-In: To ensure that all are safe, everyone, whether finished with the course or not, must check in formally at Start/Finish before courses close and before leaving the meet site.

Route Choice Reviews:  Orienteers love to talk about alternate routes and their advantages and disadvantages.  If you would like to discuss your choices after you do the course, there will be advanced orienteers near the Start/Finish area who would enjoy going over your route with you.
