It's time for something a little different down Route 83.  Jeff Brodsky is setting a special Score-O course at Kentucky Camp, on Sunday, March 20.  Dave Follette is gonna run this shindig.

There's some fun facts you need to know about a Score-O.  Treat this as an Easter egg hunt - there will be a whole lot of controls on the map - your job is to get as many as you can in any order, within the time limits of 2 OR 3 hours.  Some controls are worth 5 points, some 10.  That's all there is to it !!

What's nice about a Score-O is that you go as far or as fast as you want.  And navigate anyway you can.  You see a control - punch it !

Fees:  All courses:  $5/individual, $8/team for members of any recognized orienteering club.  $10/individual, $15/team for nonmembers.  Compasses rent for $1.  Safety whistles sell for $1.  Every person, all courses, all meets is required to carry some type of safety whistle.

Friend-For-Free:  Members may invite one guest for free to this event.  For details and restrictions, click here.

Schedule:  While there will be an Orienteering clinic at 8:30 AM, there will be no separate beginners or advanced courses.  Everyone gets the same map.  The course will open at 9:00 AM.  You can start anytime after that, but no later than 11:00 AM.  The course will be closed at 1:00 PM - when we will start collecting controls.  SO, if you want to go out for 3 hours, you better start sooner than 10 AM.

Check-In:  To insure that all are safe, everyone, whether finished with the course or not, must check in formally at Start/Finish before courses close and before leaving the meet site.

Newcomers:  Go directly to Registration.  Ask for instructions and introductory information.  To attend the free beginners’ clinic, arrive between 8:15 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

Route Choice Reviews:  Orienteers love to talk about alternate routes and their advantages and disadvantages.  If you would like to discuss your choices after you do the course, there will be advanced orienteers near the Start/Finish area who would enjoy going over your route with you.

Carrying Water for Mining Gold

This picture, taken near Bisbee, shows canvas water bags loaded on a burro. It is typical of how early miners brought water to Greaterville and Kentucky Camp. (Image and Caption Credit: Wikimedia Commons)
