If you didn’t attend the Box Canyon orienteering event April 2nd, you missed out on a great opportunity to hone your navigation skills on a course set by Jeff Brucker.  We had perfect weather conditions for orienteering in these beautiful rolling hills with lots of reentrants.

We had a 2-hour and a 3-hour competitive Navigation Race.  Our only 2-hour finisher, Don Fallis, scored an impressive 660 points.  The easiest controls counted 10 points; more difficult ones counted up to 40 points.  There were a total of 39 controls (see the map here, with optimum route shown).  In the 3-hour category, Bret Sarnquist came in 2 min and 40 sec faster than Ron Birks; both scored a perfect 990 points (see Ron's actual route here).

For those who wanted to work on their navigation skills, we offered a 2-hour recreational Map Trek.  To introduce beginners to this sport, Jeff Brucker held a navigation clinic.  There were plenty of easy controls for novices.  I hope to see all those who were new to orienteering again in the future.

I want to thank Jeff Brucker for all his hard work in setting the course, and my children, Jodi, Jonathan, Jaret, Julie, and Jenny, for helping me with meet director duties.
